Privacy policy
Last updated: October 18, 2026. Person in charge of protecting personal information: Christopher Plante, Montreal (Quebec), hello@burnthepile.com.
In short
- We keep no student work, no grades and no student names.
- Papers pass through our server without being stored, then are sent to our artificial intelligence provider (Google) solely for the services you request: grading, language checks, automatic splitting of papers in one scan and straightening photos taken sideways.
- You can hide the student’s name before sending: the top of each paper’s first page (or of every page, as you choose; adjustable height, shown on the thumbnails) is then blanked in your browser before anything is sent; to straighten a photo taken sideways, only the centre of the page is sent, whether or not the option is ticked. A name written elsewhere on the paper (later pages, margins) is not hidden: a student code remains the safest option.
- We keep only your access key, its page balance and, if you buy a pack, the payment email. If you suggest an idea (home page), we keep your text and, if you provide it, your email so we can reply; write to us to have them deleted.
Student work and results
The pages you import are prepared in your browser (converted to images, resized, name hidden if you chose to), then sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) to our server, which forwards them to Google (Gemini API) for grading. Our server processes the papers in memory only: it does not store them and does not write their content to any log. Results are returned to your browser and stay in your tab until you end the session or close the page.
We use the paid tier of the Gemini API. Under its terms, Google does not use this data to improve its products or train its models; it may be kept for a limited time solely to detect abuse. At Google, images are readable while they are processed: encryption protects them in transit, not from being read by the grading service.
Grades and comments produced by the AI are suggestions: the teacher reviews and edits them before using them. We make no decision about any student.
Students and schools
Papers may contain information about students, often minors. Teachers use the service on behalf of their school and under its rules. To limit what is sent, we recommend hiding the name (an option in the app) or using a student number instead of a name, and leaving out sensitive information that is not needed for grading. The school informs students and parents about the use of artificial intelligence tools according to its own policies (for example, under MFIPPA in Ontario).
Schools and school boards that want a data processing agreement or the summary of our privacy impact assessment can write to hello@burnthepile.com.
Our providers and where data is processed
- Google LLC (Gemini API): grading. Processed in the United States and other countries where Google operates data centres.
- Cloudflare, Inc.: hosting of the site and server, access-key database, technical logs. Global network; company based in the United States.
- Stripe: payments. We never see your card.
- Google Fonts: the site’s fonts; your browser sends your IP address when it downloads them.
Because data is processed outside Quebec, we carried out a privacy impact assessment and concluded that the protections offered by these providers, given the measures above (nothing kept on our side, paid tier without training, optional name hiding), are adequate. This data may be subject to the laws of the countries where it is processed.
Information we keep, and for how long
- Access key and page balance: to provide the service. Free-trial keys are deleted after 90 days; purchased keys are kept while in use, or until you ask us to delete them.
- Email given at payment: linked to your key, to help you if you lose it. It is deleted with the key. Stripe keeps the transaction records required by law.
- Non-reversible fingerprint (keyed hash) of your IP address for a free trial: to limit abuse. Automatically erased after 24 hours, at most 25 hours (hourly clean-up).
- Cloudflare technical logs (page requested, time, result code and, where applicable, IP address; never the content of papers): for security and troubleshooting, kept a few days (7 days at most).
- In your browser: your access key and your settings (point total, mode, options) are kept in your browser so you don’t have to re-enter them; the assessment name and typed answer key stay there only until the tab is closed; no student data is kept there. “End session” also erases the answer key and can remove the key; on a shared computer, do so at the end of your session.

Privacy incidents
If a privacy incident presents a risk of serious harm, we promptly notify Quebec’s Commission d’accès à l’information and the people affected (and the school, when known), and take steps to reduce the risk. We keep a register of incidents.
